friendship: food for the soul
One of the best things about writing a book, designing and building a website and starting a blog is the friendships – across town and across the Internet – that have sprung up as a result. As I’m writing this, my friend, Becky (she of my hands-down favorite Etsy shop – http://www.etsy.com/shop/BeckyM ) is sending something really amazing for my October giveaway. I value this contribution so much, I won’t be announcing the giveaway until it arrives. I anticipate having the whole thing together by Monday (10/4) so be sure to check back then, if not before.
Back to the friendship thing… I chat with Becky via Etsy and she is one of the nicest people I’ve encountered in my travels around the world wide web. Becky is not only incredibly talented, she is warm, generous and open. It is such a pleasure to visit her shop and periodically exchange emails. I have the best reminder of her right on my desk, too (see the desktop ‘sandwich’ photos below). As I stated in the title of this post, friendships are food for the soul and this felt masterpiece is the perfect metaphor for it, in my opinion.
Now, I just need more friends to invite me to baby showers or little ones birthday parties so I can have the excuse to continue buying my favorite kids’ gift – felt food from Becky’s shop – ok?
Whereas I found Becky by searching for imaginary food items, I was found myself recently via an Internet search. An amazing mom, Shana, found me when she researched Harry Potter themed ideas for her daughter and came upon the parties section of my website. Despite not meeting in person or talking on the phone (yet), we have had some in-depth email chats getting to know each other (appreciating our mutual love of the visual arts and ‘over the top’ party planning to name a few). Yes, she’s my kind of gal! Wait till you hear the AMAZING things she did for her daughter’s 8th birthday party (I’m hoping she’ll post it soon so I can share the link). She’s a family/lifestyle photographer and I’m bummed we live on opposite sides of the country. Wouldn’t you love to have this woman (http://www.shanasantow.com/ ) take photos of your family?
I would love to get to know more people this way; it makes the world seem much smaller and friendlier, don’t you think? So, please consider this an open invitation to start a dialog with me and build community together!

P.S. Doesn’t the felt tomato in the photo look a bit like a peace sign? It reminds me of one of my other “Becky’s” (I have many special Becky’s in my life, FYI). Becky D. always signs off with “Peace Out!”…cracks me up every time.

I’ve been blown away by the community that you can build through blogging. It started when we moved overseas and I met, seriously, almost every single one of my expat friends through our blogs. And now as a mom I’ve made some great friends whom I hope to meet in real life one day. They provided me with such incredible, invaluable support in the months after D was born. Now it’s coming full circle, and is amazing to get comments every once in a while from someone who found my blog and tells me how much she’s appreciated my posts. Pretty wonderful. =)
