raise your glass (we raised $5k)
Kudos to everyone who attended our kickoff wine & tapas party to support Sunnyvale schools… in just about two hours, we raised $5,000 – holy cow!
For those of you following the trials and tribulations of the California state budget, this is our new reality. Our weeks-invested governor will be cutting where he can and although K-12 is not on the immediate chopping block, we anticipate it will be soon in order to bring California’s out-of-control spending back in line.
So, rather than wait for the proverbial ax to drop, our district (SESD) decided to proactively avoid increases in class size, staff reductions or cuts to core curriculum areas like math and science. SESD voted on January 20th to place a parcel tax measure on the May 2011 (mail-in) ballot. Dr. Ben Picard, our amazing superintendent, recruited me to the organizing group to help spread the word about the parcel tax. We are calling ourselves “A Committee to Support Sunnyvale Schools” and we hope you’ll join us, particularly if you are a Sunnyvale resident.
What can you do to help, you ask? Right now, you can follow us on Facebook! I’ve designed a logo and a Facebook page; you may find it at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Support-Sunnyvale-Schools/179411375412877 – we are trying to get 500+ fans in the immediate future; please sign up now! We will use the Facebook page and our soon to be launched website to communicate our activities and needs – http://supportsunnyvaleschools.org/ – look for it next week.
Paul and I hope to host a few more social events during the campaign. Look for an upcoming “coffee morning” to be advertised on the Facebook page; if you want to sample some of my homemade tapas or Paul’s impeccable espresso drinks, here’s your chance!
Additionally, if you are so inclined, you can make a donation to our campaign hope chest (“make hope, not war!”) to help with printing and mailing costs for informational postcards and flyers. We need to urge Sunnyvale residents to vote “YES!” on the measure. I am donating my graphic design skills pro bono but printing and mailing do not come free (or cheap for that matter). With over 100,000 residents in Sunnyvale, it adds up.
If you want to contribute, please send me an email offline and I’ll send you the details. Thanks!
