psa: dolphins
I don’t often stand on a soapbox, but I was so distressed last night after viewing the excellent documentary, The Cove, I felt compelled to take a stand. Unbeknownst to many, there is a senseless slaughter of dolphins and porpoises carried out with chilling efficiency every year in Taiji, Japan. The brave director and camera people risked their lives to capture on film the tragic herding and killing of these beautiful, intelligent creatures. The Japanese fishermen who carry out these vicious acts showed no remorse and tried to threaten and intimidate the documentary crew into silence. The resulting film is riveting and depressing.
I woke up early this morning and dashed off a letter to President Obama, urging him to call for a worldwide ban on hunting or capturing any cetacean (dolphins up to whales). I know it’s not much, but it’s something. I signed on online petition too and rather than pester my family and friends via email, I thought I’d post here to see if anyone else wants to add their support to this worthy cause (by signing the petition). P.S. Did you know that dolphins like to surf, just like we do? They are amazing creatures and we have a lot to learn from them, not the other way around.
